When you divide by (a-b), since a=b, you effectively divide by zero. That's why it doesn't work. You can't divide by zero. Now try to understand... ohhhh math... so hard.... mmmm.... complicated... mmmm i can't figure out that 2 and 2 can't equal 5... mmmm

wow thats just retarded. you are just rewriting basic laws of math. (a=b)=(2=2) (im using 2 as the variable right now). It all works out till a+b=b. 2+2 does not equal 2.

if a=b then (a-b)=0, so (a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b) -> (a+b)*0 = b*0 -> 0=0

Additionally, in reference to "lollermelon"'s comment that .999... = 1, that's correct. There is a law that says that between any two numbers lies another number, and between .999... and 1, there can be no number. Thus .999.. and 1 are the same number.
1/9 = .11111...
2/9 = .22222...
..
8/9 = .88888...
9/9 = .99999... or 1
